Will there be sweet corn for 2013 Sweet Corn Days

By Marcie Klomp

That is the question plaguing members of Lime Springs Community Club. Although there are other events and free items to bring people to town for Sweet Corn Days Aug. 9-11, the free sweet corn has always been a big draw. With the late planting season and rainy weather, it is unclear if sweet corn will be available.

Weddings remembered

Sammi Pisney modeled Grandma Joyce Pisney’s wedding dress during the program at Cresco Care.

By Marcie Klomp

Residents and friends at Cresco Care were able to look beyond the wrinkles and gray hair to a time when the ladies were fresh-faced young women standing at the altar with their sweeties.

A Wedding Day Memories Program was given by staff and included pictures, keepsakes and bridal gowns from residents and those caring for them. Some of the gowns were worn and others were so fragile they were only on display.

It was fitting the program was held June 21 as June is the traditional month of weddings.

Mary Jo Aversano, Social Service Consultant, was Master of Ceremonies, and Activity Coordinator Leanne Sauesr played piano. What wedding is complete without a cake? None. Kitchen staff were able to make a cupcake-shaped wedding dress for an afternoon snack.

In the ‘Lime’light

Judge Matthew Opat

Judge Matthew Opat

Well, his hard work paid off. He attended six Howard County schools, including Schley, Lourdes, Elma, Lime Springs, Chester and Cresco, before graduating from Crestwood in 1970. Matthew Opat continued his education and received a B.A. from the University of Iowa and his J.D. (Juris Doctor degree) from the Hamline University School of Law.

After practicing law for 35 years, he was recently appointed District Court Judge in Minnesota’s Third Judicial District by Gov. Mark Dayton. The judgeship will be chambered at Preston in Fillmore County.

His investiture (swearing in) ceremony is taking place on June 28 at 3:00 p.m. at Potter Auditorium in Chatfield. The ceremony is open to the public and, Opat joked, “It seats 800 people, so there’s plenty of room!” A reception will follow. Many judges and possibly the governor may be attending.

Carl Haayer retires from PO.

Carl Haayer has decided to hang up his mail bags for the last time on Friday, June 14. He has been with the United States Postal Service for over 16 years, starting March 17, 1997.

He began his postal career as PMR (Post Master Relief) under Juletta Wendel. She retired a half-year later. He was then under Gerald Buttolph until just a few years ago when he became OIC (Officer In Charge).

The biggest change for customers to the local post office has been recently when it went from eight hours per day down to two hours (2:00-4:00 p.m.).

Changes taking place behind the counter may not be noticeable to customers, but Haayer has definitely seen them! “When I came, we had a ballpoint pen and adding machine,” he joked. “Now we have a calculator, money order machine, credit card machine, stamp machine, scanners for packages and the biggest is the computer.” He added many of those changes took place in just the last five to six years.
