Richard ‘Dick’ Miller, 73, LeRoy

Richard (Dick) Miller, 73, of LeRoy, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2011 at the Spring Valley Care Center after a short battle with lung cancer.
Richard Miller was born on December 18, 1937 on a farm near Taopi, Minn., the son of Lyle and Florence (Meese) Miller. At the age of two-and-a-half, the family moved to Iowa. Dick went to country school kindergarten to half-way through third grade, then through fourth grade to Lime Springs then back to country school through eighth grade. He attended Lime Springs High School, graduating in 1956. He attended one semester at Iowa State and returned to Lime Springs to work on a farm for a short while.
He then enlisted in the U.S. Air Force in January 1957 and took basic training in Texas. He attended Tech school in Biloxi, Miss. for radar operator and spent two-and-one-half years in Germany returning to Cape Cod, Mass. and worked in airborne radar until time of an honorable discharge on Sept. 15, 1961.
He worked for his uncle in New Jersey for a short period of time and then became self employed as a trucker for 30 years. He was united in marriage to Janis Miedema on June 2, 1962 at the Greenleafton Reformed Church. After their marriage they lived in New Jersey until November 1991 when he returned to Minnesota to retire and go fishing. He continued to drive truck until he retired in September 2010. Janis joined him in May of 1995. He enjoyed bowling, shooting pool and “loved’ his green and white truck.
Dick is survived by his wife Janis; three sisters, Betty (Dean) Fausnaugh of Laurel, Mont., Patricia Vandegrift of North Augusta, S.C. and Joyce Ervin of Milford, Ohio; one brother, Jim (Judy) of Lime Springs; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; one brother, Roy; and two brothers-in-law, Allen Vandegrift and Edward Ervin.
Friends may call from 4:00-7:00 p.m. Wednesday, April 13, 2011 at Thauwald Funeral Home in Spring Valley and also one hour prior to services at the church on Thursday.
Funeral services will be held on April 14, at 10:30 a.m. at Greenleafton Reformed Church in rural Preston with Pastor Candie Carey officiating. Burial will be in the Greenleafton Cemetery, rural Preston.
