Jordy Johns, 67, Preston

Jordy Johns, age 67, of Preston, Minn., died Sunday, August 28, 2011, at home of cancer.

Jordy was born in Harrow, Ontario, Canada as Arthur G. Meldrum Johns on September 19, 1943 to Betty and Currie Johns. Although born in Canada, he came to live in the United States as a child and graduated from Libertyville High School in Libertyville, Ill. He was raised on the Edward L. Ryerson farm in Deerfield, Ill., with his Uncle Bill and Aunt Jean Craig, who were the farm managers, where he learned to ride and train Arabian horses. After graduating from the Chicago Art Institute with a Bachelors degree in Fine Arts, he continued with his passion for training horses and became a respected horseman with many World and National championships in several divisions with Arabian, Morgan, and quarter horses. He was a longtime member of the United States Equestrian Federation, United Professional Horseman’s Association, Arabian Horse Association, Northern Illinois Arabian Horse Club, the Morgan Horse Association, the Quarter Horse Association, and the Minnesota Paint Horse Association. Jordy taught many people not only about their horses but also about themselves and their abilities. Jordy was also known for his ability to communicate with children as well as educated adults. He will be deeply missed by his friends, family, and the entire equine industry.

Survivors include his wife, Kim-Ann, whom he married on June 21, 2008, under the old oak tree on the farm in Preston; and also his brother, Richard Johns of Antioch, Ill. He was preceded in death by his parents; his uncle and aunt, Bill and Jean Craig; and his cousin, Saundra Craig.

In accordance with Jordy’s wishes, his body will be cremated. There will be a Celebration of Life for Jordy on Saturday, October 1, 2011, at 2:00 p.m. at Stone House Stables, located at 21745 US 52 in Preston, Minn. Please join us.

The family requests in lieu of flowers, memorials may be given towards his medical fund at F&M Community Bank in Preston, Minn., or to “Paula’s Purse” at Gundersen Lutheran Medical Center in La Crosse to assist cancer patients with gas/transportation to and from the hospital.
