‘Tis the season of giving

Janelle Mahr, second from left, and Leann Thomas, far right, represented Oneota Club by giving Dorene Burnikel, Janet DeVries, Jerry Johnson, Carla Moser, Mary Stevenson and Wilt Thomas grants for their organizations.

Sure it’s great to tear off the wrapping paper and find that perfect gift hidden underneath. But Christmas is also about giving, and that is what the Oneota Club did this year. The group consists of women in the Lime Springs area dedicated to the community.

During the Christmas in Lime Springs celebration, Oneota Club presented checks to six organizations in the area. Money was raised from the sixth annual Dad’s Belgian Waffle breakfast during Sweet Corn Days.

The Dad’s Belgian Waffle breakfast tradition began in 2006 when the Lime Springs Swimming Pool asked organizations to raise money—as they were in need. Betty DeRuiter suggested having a breakfast on the Saturday of Sweet Corn Days. She contacted them, and Oneota donated $1,000.00 to the pool.

The group booked them for the following year, deciding it is a great way to support other community projects, organizations and city entities.

Since 2006, including this year, Oneota has donated over $6,000.00 back to the community. In the past, members chose where the money was to be donated.

During the presentation at Christmas in Lime Springs on Dec. 4, Janelle Mahr said, “This year, we thought there may be an organization that has a need we are not aware of, and we invited all organizations to apply for a grant. All the applicants received part or all of their requests.”

Those representing the organizations receiving grants in 2011 included:

Lime Springs Community Center – Dorene Burnikel accepted a check for $200.00 to purchase a roaster.

Spring Ahead Learning Center – Jerry Johnson accepted a check for $220.00 to purchase a crib.

Lidtke Mill – Mary Stevenson accepted a check of $225.00 for repairs and upkeep.

Lime Springs Library – Janet DeVries accepted a check for $225.00 to help with program expenses.

Lime Springs Swimming Pool – Carla Moser accepted a check for $225.00 to help with roofing expenses.

Pleasant Hill Cemetery – Wilt Thomas accepted a check for $408.00 to rock the roadway.

Oneota Club members volunteer at the local school, preschool, library, churches, community events, belonging to other organizations and helping with projects. Members are also responsible for maintaining and decorating Kitchen Park.
