Marlis Matt, 79, formerly of LS

Marlis F. Matt, 79, of Elkader, Iowa, died Sunday, Feb. 5, 2012, following a short illness at the Elkader Care Center. She was born Dec. 20, 1932, in Lime Springs, Iowa, the daughter of Murl and Ella (Linderbaum) Gobin. Marlis was raised in the Lime Springs area. She graduated from Lime Springs High School in 1951. She attended UNI in Cedar Falls, where she obtained a teaching certificate and later taught in the Buckingham, Chester, Decorah and Garnavillo School districts.

On May 30, 1964, Marlis was united in marriage to Lloyd Leo Matt at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church in Garnavillo, Iowa. Together they resided in Guttenberg, Iowa where Lloyd owned and operated the North Star gas station; later they moved to Farmersburg, Iowa. She enjoyed watching Iowa Hawkeye sports, reading romance novels, movies and gardening. She enjoyed spending time with her grandson, Connor.

Survivors include her husband, Lloyd Matt of Elkader; two sons, Kevin (Carla) Matt of Palo, Iowa and Brian Matt of Elkader; one daughter, Julie Matt of Viroqua, Wis.; one grandson, Connor Kevin Rhys Matt; five siblings, Duane (Alberta) Gobin of Rochester, Minn., Gordon (Ruth) Gobin of Rochester, Ronald (Linda) Gobin of Wanamingo, Minn., Joanne (Stan) Larson of Chester and Shirley (Tom) Wright of Shell Rock; 14 nieces and nephews; 30 grandnieces and nephews; and five great-grandnieces and nephews.

Marlis was preceded in death by her parents.

A memorial service was held Feb. 9 at St. Joseph’s Catholic Church at Elkader with interment at Garnavillo City Cemetery.
