The applications can be picked up at Lime Springs City Hall or emailed by contacting They are due on or before Thursday, April 19, 2012.

The money to be given away in 2012 is from a little old lady. Grace Hughes was born near Lime Springs in 1911. She graduated from Lime Springs High School and went to beauty college. She had a beauty shop in her home until she was in her 80s. She never married and saved her money.

When she passed away in 2004, the City learned she had formed a foundation, with seven percent of the net income to be given as grants each year. It was estimated there was to be around $20,000 given away to local organizations annually.

Board members are Jan Cray, Jill Johnson, Barb Robinson and Michelle Busch.

Miss Hughes asked the board members of the foundation to give primary consideration to Dollars for Scholars in the local district, Lime Springs Cemetery Association, Dr. Robert Schuller Ministries, the Lime Springs United Methodist Church, the town of Lime Springs and any such tax-exempt beneficiaries.

The grants are to be used exclusively for religious, charitable, scientific, literary or educational purposes.

Through her legacy, Miss Hughes has guaranteed a steady flow of funds for many non-profit organizations in Lime Springs. Through the Grace Hughes Foundation, she will continue to be a huge influence on the town about which she cared so much.
