Evans to speak about ‘The Generous Embezzler’

Eileen Evans will give a program about her book, “Cy Thomson, The Generous Embezzler,” for the Howard-Winneshiek Genealogy Society on May 3, at 7:00 p,m, in the meeting room at the Cresco Public Library.

Her book brings to life the fascinating Howard Co. born character, Cy Thomson, who brought both national fame and fall to himself when he embezzled over a million dollars between 1911 and 1921 from the Hormel Co. at Austin, Minn. to build the Oak Dale Park in Howard County on the Minnesota border as well as state of the art farms.

The park, which Mrs. Evans says in her book, could have been the “Six Flags over Le Roy,” was ahead of anything in its time with a 1,000-couple dance pavilion, swimming pool, hotel, etc.

His Howard Co. chicken farm touted a $10,000 rooster and his Blooming Prairie, Minn. farms sold high quality breeding cattle and hogs.

Mrs. Evans, who lives in LeRoy, was a former owner/publisher along with her husband of the Lime Springs and Le Roy newspapers and continues to write for her son’s newspapers.

She will have books for sale and be available for autographs.
