Clifton Scheevel, 97, Greenleafton

Clifton Scheevel, age 97, of Spring Valley, Minn., formerly of the Greenleafton area, died Sunday, June 17, 2012, at St. Marys Hospital in Rochester.

Clifton was born Jan. 23, 1915, on a farm in York Township, Fillmore Co., Minn., the son of Fred and Della (Prinsen) Scheevel. He attended the York country school for eight years and then Preston High School for a year. He learned some of his trade with Duxbury Electric in Preston and had his own truck and did trucking for the Cherry Grove Shipping Assoc. until his marriage to Eleanor TeStroete of Preston on Sept. 3, 1940. The couple began farming on a small farm near Greenleafton and then on a larger farm north of Cherry Grove.

In 1948 they bought a garage and feed business in Greenleafton which they operated for 34 years before retiring in 1972. The couple remained in Greenleafton until moving to Spring Valley in 2002 and later became residents of Spring Valley Senior Living in 2007.

He was a longtime member of the Greenleafton Reformed Church and had served as an elder for a number of years. He enjoyed family, fishing and doing repair work for many neighbors following his retirement.

He is survived by his wife, Eleanor; three children, Janet (Ron) DenHerder of Sioux Center, Iowa, Roger (Nanci) Scheevel of Castro Valley, Calif. and Curt (Deb) Scheevel of Grand Forks, N.D.; four grandchildren, Mike (Kim) DenHerder, Ryan Scheevel, Jenny Scheevel and Nicholas Scheevel; six great-grandchildren; and a sister-in-law, V. Jean Scheevel of Edina, Minn.

He was preceded in death by two granddaughters, Debra and Sandy DenHerder, and three brothers, Melvin, Floyd and Theodore Scheevel.

The funeral was June 20, 2012, at the Greenleafton Reformed Church with Rev. Roger Lokker officiating. Burial was in the Greenleafton Cemetery. Online condolences may be left at
