In the pilot’s seat at age 10

Kristen Kuhl, of Lime Springs, took her first flying lesson for her birthday.

For her 10th birthday, Kristen Kuhl took to the air as Pilot in Command. Her dad, Rick Kuhl, a pilot himself, took her for her first lesson in a Cherokee Piper 140. She took off from the Rochester Airport, headed west and flew around the area. Kristen then did a controlled stall (when the aircraft actually stops flying), making a textbook recovery. She continued flying for about an hour and returned to the airport, making a perfect landing.

Last year, Kristen went to see the Blue Angels and became a member of the EAA Young Eagles. Two years ago, she met Astronaut Clayton Anderson, a long-time friend of her dad’s.

This summer, she flew on a trip to Florida to visit NASA Space Center and saw the Space Shuttle, NASA’s Command Center and many other NASA aircraft.

It is too early to tell if Kristen will become a pilot, but for now, she seems to be enjoying flying the skies!
