Smoking out the storm sewer

As one of the first steps to comply with the City of Lime Springs’ sewer permit, it was necessary to put smoke through the sanitary sewer to find where there are possible leaks in the system. Excessive amounts of rain water is entering the sanitary sewer.

Clerk Carla Moser explained to comply with DNR regulations, when the sewer system is updated, the town will have to disinfect the sewer water to clean it at the plant, and then disinfect it again before it is released into the creek.

The Friday Nov. 2 process found a few leaks with smoke coming out from more than the sanitary sewer. Smoke also escaped into a few basements and came out of some storm sewer accesses near Lime Springs-Chester Elementary School.
