Folks may have noticed some activity taking place at the corner, across the road from Lime Springs Travel Plaza. That activity will result in a Verizon cell tower being erected in the next month.

Tim Bowes of T.Steel Construction out of the Quad Cities said the road was being built last week. By the end of next week, the company will be tying steel for the foundation of a 250-foot, three-legged tower. A 31-ft. shaft will be dug to anchor the tower.

“We just did one in Harmony for the state of Minnesota and one in Spillville for US Cellular,” Bowes said.

Vince Abben of Tri-State Tower is the Verizon contractor for the project. “The tower will arrive the week of March 4. The prepping will be done that week.” Some preliminary work includes building a 72,000 pound hurricane-safe shelter that will have a generator. “We can then stack the tower in a day. We’re hoping to be done with the tower in a week, maybe longer.”

He couldn’t give a definitive date on when the tower would be operational. “It could be a week, or it could be a year.” Verizon still needed to get some regulatory paperwork finalized with the SEC. Although fiberoptics were installed last fall in town, they also need to be hooked up at the site.

Bowes explained cell towers are going to be getting closer in the coming years as their productivity depends on the amount of usage. When usage goes up, service goes down.

There is no exact end date in place, but it is getting closer. Life for those in Lime Springs and vicinity will be so much easier without having to go outside in the dead of winter for good cell service.
