Howard County fatalities down in past 10 years

It seems there have been a lot of accidents in northeast Iowa recently, what with a 17-year-old rural Lime Springs girl in Chickasaw County and a 69-year-old LeRoy man in Howard being killed in the last few weeks.

Sheriff Mike Miner released some figures that show traffic fatalities are quite low in the county. Although the City of Cresco had two traffic accidents in 2011, there hasn’t been a rural Howard County accident since 2010.

Those are amazing figures when a person takes into account there were 335 crashes in the county during that same three-year period.

Since 2003 there have been 1,378 crashes and only 13 fatalities in the county.

Miner says he and former sheriff Mark Grinhaug reminisced about how there were 10-11 fatalities per year when they were young officers in the 1970-80s.

The low numbers of fatalities can possibly be attributed to seat belt laws and safer vehicles.
