H-W gets HealthierUS honor

CRESCO, IOWA — Howard-Winneshiek CSD is the first entire school district in the state of Iowa to be awarded the HealthierUS School Challenge “Gold Award.”

The USDA recognizes schools with the HealthierUS School Challenge award for implementing high standards in school nutrition, physical education, and wellness.

The HUSSC is a voluntary initiative established in 2004 to recognize schools participating in the National School Lunch Program that have created healthier school environments through the promotion of nutrition and physical activity.

These awards became possible with support from students, parents, administration, and staff. In addition, the FFA Chapter’s school gardens, orchard, and investment in a local meat processing facility has expanded school wellness activities within the district.

The district has also created partnerships with:

• The Farm to School Program provides information and helps build school gardens, school orchards and connects with local growers.

• The Food and Fitness Initiative empowers students to lead the way to healthier choices through cross-aged teaching and leadership.

• Iowa Department of Education’s Team Nutrition Program

• Midwest Dairy and Fuel Up to Play 60

• The Summer Wisdom and Wellness Programs

• The North East Iowa Food Pantry’s Back Pack Program.

Superintendent, John Carver commented, “The School District promotes the importance of living healthy lifestyles in a technology-filled atmosphere especially with providing a digital device to all students at the start of the school year.

“A digital device placed in the hands of a student, connected to the Internet, with a teacher that connects and facilitates learners globally will change education. Providing students with healthy guidelines through Nutrition and Physical activity is a very important factor in our world of Technology and education.”

Nutrition Director, Cheryl Dickman stated, “This recognition complements the districts’ commitment not only to academic growth, but also to enhancing quality of life through nutrition and physical activities for the students and staff.”

An Awards Ceremony will be held at the Crestwood High School Gymnasium Friday, Aug. 30 at 1.

A letter from First Lady Michelle Obama recognizing their great achievement will be presented.

Governor Branstad and Lt. Governor Reynolds will be Skyping as a part of the ceremony to recognize the district and answering questions from students

Ann Feilman, Bureau Chief Of Nutrition and Health Services will be presenting awards to each individual school and to the School Nutrition Employees.
