Sadly, 15 members of the American Legion Auxiliary saw the writing on the wall of dwindling membership and voted to cancel its charter at a meeting on Nov. 12.

It was a somber meeting on Nov. 12, the day after Veterans Day, when 15 members of the Lime Springs American Legion Auxiliary Post 545 voted unanimously to cancel the charter it has held since March 23, 1922. It will cease to exist on June 30, 2014.

Although the Auxiliary has 48 members, many do not live in the area or are getting up in years and unable to help with events as they used to.

Connie Wagner of Osage and president of the 4th district said, “It’s a sad for a lot of you. I encourage you to transfer to another unit.” Howard County units include Cresco, Protivin and Riceville.

She went on to stay that any funds left in the organization’s coffers will be sent to another unit or to Des Moines.

After the count, President Betty Munkel admitted she was upset. “I think of what its going to do to our town.” Other officers are Vice President Elaine Moser, Secretary Phoebe Klomp and Treasurer Ellen Klomp.
