--obit-davisDon Davis, 71 of rural Ridgeway, Iowa, passed away at his home on Sunday, Dec. 22, 2013.

Donald Richard Davis was born Aug. 2, 1942. He was the son of Raymond and Sofie (Juvik) Davis of McGregor, Iowa. He was baptized and confirmed at Suede Ridge Lutheran Church of rural McGregor. He graduated from McGregor High School. He attended Luther College in Decorah, majoring in music. His first teaching job was in Rockwell, Iowa, where he taught for five years. He then moved to Cresco in 1968, where he evolved their music program, being the founder of the annual Madrigal Dinner. Continue reading

Donald Mohs, 88, Harmony

--Mohs, DonaldDonald Ray Mohs age 88, of Harmony, Minn. died Thursday, Dec. 26, 2013, at Gunderson Lutheran Hospital in La Crosse, Wis.

Donald was born Jan. 20, 1925 near Granger, Minn., the son of Emil and Edna (Ludwig) Mohs. As a young boy his family moved to Osage, Iowa. Five years later, they moved back to the Granger area where he graduated from the eighth grade. Later they moved to York, Minn. While there, Don worked for different farmers and spent a year working for Hormel in Austin, Minn.

Helen Farnsworth, 84, Cresco

--Farnsworth, Helen 2Helen E. Farnsworth age 84, of Cresco, Iowa and formerly of Lime Springs, Iowa, died Monday, Dec. 23, 2013, at the Cresco Care Center. Funeral services will be Saturday, Dec. 28 at 11 a.m. at the Lime Springs Community Center. Interment will be in the spring at Pleasant Hill Cemetery, Lime Springs. Friends may call from 3–6 p.m. Friday at Lindstrom Funeral Home in Cresco and at the Lime Springs Community Center for an hour prior to services.

The Dec. 3 Lime Springs Council meeting was the last one for two council members. Going off council are Corey Gates after 10 years and Gary Klomp after 12 years. Come January, Jim Miller and Tary Kolek will join Brian Johnson, Leann Thomas and Kevin Bill. Barb Robinson is mayor.

Howard County Engineer Nick Rissman confirmed A-23, the blacktop between Lime Springs and Cresco, is being paved in 2014. The estimated cost of that project is $3,091,618.54.

He brought three quotes to council in regards to repaving from the city limits to the east all the way through the first intersection of North Miller and East Jackson St.

Oneota grants given at festival

The Oneota Club gave away another $1,000 worth of grants during Christmas in Lime Springs. The grants are funded yearly from proceeds of the Dad’s Belgium Waffle Breakfast during Sweet Corn Days. The club has been having the breakfast since 2006.
