Kerry Derry, 64, formerly LeRoy

--obit-derry-youngKerry Derry, age 64, formerly of LeRoy, Minn. died Friday, Feb. 7, 2014 at Maple Crest Care Center in Fayette, Iowa.

Kerry Dean Derry was born Sept. 10, 1949 in Jefferson, Iowa to Darrell and Doris (Lewis) Derry. His childhood was spent on the farm around Jefferson and Manson, Iowa, until the family moved to LeRoy.

He attended grade school in Pomaroy and Dayton, Iowa and graduated from LeRoy-Ostrander High School in 1968. While in high school he was the manager for the boys football, wrestling and basketball teams. He attended and graduated from Mankato State University with a Masters in Agri-Business after five years of schooling. Kerry also attended the University of Minnesota-Waseca for one-and-a-half years.

--obit-derry-oldHe loved cooking, farming and gardening, working with his dad on the farm in the summer and attending college in the winter. He served as the President of the Jr. Farm Bureau for several years. While attending school in Mankato, he worked as a ward clerk at the hospital and post office there. In 1973 Kerry was in a car accident and received brain damage. He was able to come back a long way from his injuries. He was never married. Kerry was a life-long member of the Methodist Church and was a good Christian.

Kerry is survived by his parents Darrell and Doris Derry of LeRoy and his siblings, Deborah (Robert) Hofner of Ostrander, Roger (Lynne) Derry of New Hampton, Iowa, Rick (Kim) Derry of Rose Creek, Minn., Randy (Mary) Derry of Spring Valley, Wis., Darla (Dave) Schroeder of Fairview Heights, Ill. and Dawn (Evan) Woller of Merrill, Wis. He is also survived by several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral serviceswere held Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014 at United Methodist Church in Chester, Iowa, with the Rev. Melanie Greengo officiating. Burial will be in LeRoy Cemetery.
