Area churches prepare for Ash Wed., Lent

The annual ecumenical observance of Lent by area churches will begin with the March 5 Ash Wednesday service at the Lime Springs United Methodist Church at 7 p.m. The Chime Choir will be playing two numbers: “Fairest Lord Jesus” and “Were You There?,” directed by Kim Kitchen. Pastor Melanie Greengo will deliver the message.

Also featured will be the “The Flutes,” Sue Richter, Jill Johnson and Kim Kitchen. Their numbers will include “Leaning on the Everlasting Arms,” “Power in the Blood” and “There is a Redeemer.” Donna Ihns will accompany the trio. The ladies have been performing together for two years, but they all began playing in grade school, Richter in Preston, Minn., Kitchen in Harmony, Minn. and Johnson in Riceville.

All three have done extensive solo work, and Johnson and Kitchen also play the piccolo. Richter is organist for the LSUMC and pianist for the Lutheran church at Maple Leaf, south of Saratoga.

The schedule of Lenten services, following the theme, “The Last Commandments,” was planned by Pastor Maureen Hagen, Pastor Melanie Greengo and Dr. Donna Ihns.

Fellowship will follow all services except Ash Wednesday and Maundy Thursday.

March 5: Ash Wednesday, United Methodist-Lime Springs, Pastor Greengo, 7 p.m.

March 12: St. Paul’s Lutheran-Lime Springs, Pastor Hagen, 6:30 p.m.

March 19: Chester Lutheran, Pastor Christensen, 6:30 p.m.

March 26: United Methodist-Chester, Pastor Greengo, 6:30 p.m.

April 2: Saetersdal Lutheran, Pastor Hagen, 6:30 p.m.

April 9: United Methodist-Lime Springs, Dr. Ihns, 6:30 p.m.

April 17: Maundy Thursday, St. Paul’s Lutheran-Lime Springs, 7 p.m. It will include three special Holy Week elements: anointing with oil, foot washing and Holy Communion.

April 18: Good Friday, Saetersdal, 2 p.m.
