Milford ‘Mel’ Johnson, 62, LS

--obit-johnsonMilford “Mel” Johnson, age 62 of Lime Springs, Iowa, died peacefully early Sunday morning at his home with his family present.

Mel was born Oct. 22, 1951 in Rapid City, S.D. to Oral and Phyllis (Fishbaugher) Johnson. He grew up in Harmony, Minn. and graduated from Harmony High School in 1969.

Through the years Mel worked at Rochester Silo, drove semi, worked at Johnson Comfort Systems, owned Rendezvous Lounge in Lime Springs and currently owned and operated Johnson Lawn Care. He was married to Peggy Remick and they were later divorced. In 1978 he married Cindy Unverzagt. Mel was an avid fan of the Twins and Vikings.

Richard ‘Dick’ Zak, 95, Cresco

--obit-zakRichard “Dick” Zak, age 95, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away Friday, April 25, 2014 at Regional Health Services of Howard County in Cresco.

Dick was born on July 5, 1918 on a farm in Howard County, near Maple Leaf to Frank and Antonia (Marovetz) Zak. Dick attended country school and graduated from Immaculate Conception Academy in Elma. He attended Loras College for one year and worked as an electrician before enlisting in the U.S. Army Signal Corp. He served 44 months, including 38 months overseas during WW II, until being discharged in 1945.

A “plunging” mania has hit the area! It started as an awareness/fund-raiser for Landon, a six-month-old baby from Missouri with cancer. Then it morphed!

You know that old adage, “If your friends jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?” Well that’s what happened with this plunge. Friends challenged friends to jump in lakes, rivers and water tanks, videotaped it and posted it on Facebook. It worked. Word got out about baby Landon.
Then some locals decided, why not do it for Lime Springs’ own Madison Rahlf, 14, who has battled Acute Lymphoblastic Leukemia since she was diagnosed on July 10, 2013?

Softball sign-up on Saturday

Lime Springs Softball sign-up is Saturday, April 26 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the ball field. Teams are ages 5-8 for the skills team or higher; ages 9-10 for Super Pee Wee; ages 11-12 for Pee Wee; ages 13-15 for middle kids; and ages 16-18 for the big team.
