H.C. second to be HBI

The Grow Howard County Task Force learned Howard County was the second in the state to be named a Home Base Iowa community. (First was Greene County.)

HBI is an initiative to make it easy for veterans to go online to find a comparable job to what he or she was doing in the military. Linked to that are what the rest of the community has to offer: great schools, housing, four season outdoor activities, proximity to larger towns, etc.

Currently, housing is one of the stumbling blocks. Fran Burke admitted, “In my opinion, we need everything [homes and rental properties].” A committee has been set up to look at a plan on getting affordable housing. A housing survey done by an outside entity is a must.

An HBI recognition ceremony will take place on June 26, during the Mighty Howard County Fair. Gov. Terry Branstad will be on hand.
