Kathryn O’Brien, 78, Cresco

-obit-obrienKathryn O’Brien, age 78, of Cresco, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 at home.

Kathryn Lillian Harris was born Sept. 17, 1935 to William and Georgina (Phinney) Harris in Howard County, Iowa. On Oct. 28, 1953, she was united in marriage to Gervase O’Brien at Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church in Lourdes, Iowa. Together they farmed and raised their 10 children. Kathryn loved farming and gardening, always making sure her potatoes were planted on Good Friday, including this year. On St. Patrick’s Day, Kathryn liked to enjoy a glass of green beer to show off her Irish heritage. She was a member of Our Lady of Lourdes Catholic Church and the rosary society. Kathryn’s children, grandchildren and family meant the world to her.

Kathryn is survived by her children, Sue (Bill) Puffer of Spring Valley, Minn., daughter-in-law, Linda O’Brien of Cresco, Terri (Al) deNeui of Waverly, Iowa, Rick (Cheri) O’Brien of Cresco, Donna (Rick) Jensen of Guttenburg, Iowa, Sherry (Damon) Gragert of Lime Springs, Iowa, Russell (Kimberly) O’Brien of Cresco, Tom (Bev) O’Brien of Cresco, Sandra (Jeremy) Cornwell of Osage, Iowa and Kathy (Darin) Ferrie of Cresco; 27 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchilren, with three on the way; a great-great-grandchild; four step grandchildren; nine step great-grandchildren, with one on the way; and siblings, George M. Harris of Cedar Falls, Iowa and Fred (Lucille) Harris of Waterloo, Iowa.

Preceding Kathryn in death are her parents, William and Georgina; husband, Gervase; son, Dave; and three brothers, John, Francis and Roger Harris.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2014 at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Elma, Iowa. Burial will take place at Our Lady of Lourdes Cemetery. Visitation will be held 4-7 p.m. on Friday, April 25, 2014 at the Hindt-Hudek Funeral Home, 404 North Elm Street, Cresco. Visitation will continue an hour prior to the service at the church.
