Arthur ‘Gene’ Warnke, 84, LS

Arthur “Gene” Warnke passed away on Wednesday, May 14, 2014 at Evans Memorial Home in Cresco, Iowa.

Arthur Eugene Warnke was born to Arthur E. K. Warnke and Emma (Wermuth) on Jan, 12, 1930 in Saratoga Township. He was baptized on March 30, 1930 and was confirmed in the Lutheran faith at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lime Springs.

Gene graduated from Lime Springs High School with the Class of 1948. He was drafted into the United States Army in 1951 and was discharged in August 1953. He was stationed in Alaska during that time. Back in Iowa, Gene farmed with his brother, Paul, and then became a rural mail carrier. His bases were in Lime Springs, Chester and Cresco, stretching out over 30 years. He enjoyed his job and reminisced about driving then, when the roads weren’t great and one could get caught in whiteouts and snow banks.

Gene liked to fish for trout and had a 22-inch brown trout mounted. Hunting pheasants was a favorite pastime, too. Gene enjoyed the Iowa Hawkeyes; he was a true Hawkeye fan.
Gene is survived by two sisters, Lucille of Cresco and Ellen Kirkestue of Postville, Iowa, along with many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Paul; and a brother-in-law, Edwin Kirkestue.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday, May 17, 2014 at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Lime Springs. Friends may call one hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be in the Saratoga Cemetery in Saratoga following the services at 1:30 p.m. Lindstrom Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.
