Over 100 dusty, dirty and thirsty ATVers made their way to Brown Park on Aug. 16 as they participated in the first ever area ATV ride. The event took place on Friday and Saturday, with Cresco being home base.

About 75 ATVs and four-wheelers arrived in Cresco Thursday night and were ready to head out on a tour of northeast Iowa Friday morning. Riders went to Bluffton, Decorah, Calmar and back to Cresco. On Saturday, they went to Elma, Riceville, Lime Springs and back to Cresco.

Melissa Pitzenberger, Office Manager at 95.9 KCHA radio, one of the sponsors of the ride, commented the ride had gone very well while on the Lime Springs break. “The only downfall was the dry conditions.” Riders and machines had a thin, and sometimes thick, layer of dust on them.

“We’re hoping to plan another one for next year,” Pitzenberger said.
Members of the five entities (Community Center, Fire Department, Library, Pool and Parks) of Lime Springs worked the table that contained a huge variety of cookies and bars. “We like stopping off and letting non-profits make some money,” Pitzenberger noted.

The radio station, along with 98.7 KISS Country and 95.1 The Bull, got special licenses, permits and insurance to be allowed to have ATVs and four-wheelers traveling the roadways, which is not acceptable under Iowa law for recreation purposes.

With everything going smoothly this year, some organizers are hoping this will prove to lawmakers riding ATVs on the roads is okay and should be allowed by law. Time will tell. In the meantime, those from the ride look forward to a bigger and better event in 2015.
