Unofficial results for Howard County

Howard County Auditor Julie Chapman sent out UNOFFICIAL results for the Nov. 4, 2014 election at 11 p.m.

The results are unofficial because there may still be absentee ballots in the mail. At the Monday, Nov. 10 Supervisors’ meeting, the votes will be canvassed. That is when all ballots postmarked Nov. 3 or sooner will be opened and counted.
District 2 Supervisor had incumbent Don Burnikel over Joe Pisney by just two votes (569-567).

This race could still go either way. It will be called official on Nov. 10. It is after that meeting that any candidate can ask for a re-count.

In District 3, incumbent Jan McGovern had 691 votes to James Kitchen’s 408.

The highly contested contest between incumbent Josh Byrnes and Laura Hubka in District 51 for State Representative was close in Howard (Byrnes—1,737 vs Hubka—1,691), but Byrnes ended up winning by 26 percent overall (7,262-4,264).

In bigger races, Terry Branstad/Kim Reynolds won governor/lt. gov. with 59 percent and Jack Hatch/Monica Vernon with 37 percent.

The U.S. Senate race was watched nation-wide as long-time Sen. Tom Harkin retired, leaving both Democrats wanting to retain the seat and Republicans hoping for an upset. An upset it was, with Joni Ernst taking 52 percent of the votes compared to Bruce Braley’s 44 percent.
