After a recount on Nov. 25, the votes still showed Don Burnikel as winner of District 2 over Joe Pisney. Each candidate gained one vote on the recount, which upped Burnikel to 570 votes to Pisney’s 568.

After Pisney requested the recount, each candidate was given the opportunity to choose a designee. Pisney chose Todd Kowalke, and Burnikel chose Mike McGuire. The designees then had to agree on a third person to serve as the mediator. That person was Kevin Schoeberl.

The trio decided to have the machine recount the ballots. Also present were staff of the Howard County Auditor’s office and a few members of the public, including Pisney.

Auditor Julie Chapman explained, “We ran the machine. The ballots have to remain in the auditor’s control. Basically everybody was overseeing everybody.”

The tape totals for absentee; Protivin, Lime Springs and Cresco 1B cities; and New Oregon, Albion, Forest City and Vernon Springs Townships were rerun through the machine.

The process took until 9:15 for the 1,164 ballots.

The new Howard County Board of Supervisors, which is the same as the old board, will take the oath of office on Jan. 2, 2015.
